Poor Max! He’s just a little kid who loves his Grandma and wants to help make her a birthday cake. Poor Ruby! She’s the big sister who is also trying to make the cake for Grandma. The only problem: Max keeps messing it up. He breaks the eggs, drops the flour on the floor, and spills the milk. Max makes many trips to the grocer for replacement ingredients for Ruby’s cake – and for the key ingredient for the earthworm cake he is making for Grandma: Red Hot Marshmallow Squirters. He keeps adding the Squirters to the grocery lists – but since he can only draw, it takes several attempts before the grocer figures out what Max wants. Max doesn’t give up! Neither does Ruby, who has a job to do and manages to get it done.
This gentle story is beautifully told, with delightful illustrations. It is also quite funny, and fun to read aloud. Grandma ends up with two beautiful cakes, both made with love.
